What is a PID?

What is a temperature PID control doing for the Rancilio SIlvia Espresso Machine?

PID (Proportional-Integral-Derivative)

The PID (Proportional-Integral-Derivative) is a mechanism that will control the boiler heating element of the Rancilio Silvia Espresso Machine.  This mechanism, when installed properly, will increase the boiler temperature in calculated increments in order to reach a set temperature as called Set Value ( SV. )

By increasing the boiler temperature in calculated increments, a constant, stable temperature is created, which will greatly enhance the quality of coffee produced by the Silvia.

The PID controller increases the boiler temperature in the most efficient and fastest way possible, without overshooting the set temperature value.  The PID controller will then maintain a constant set temperature at idle time (plus/minus 1 degree or less), producing excellent temperature stability.

A Rancilio Silvia Espresso Machine without a PID controller has the boiler controlled only by a mechanical thermostat, which causes the boiler to have very wide swings in temperature, which in turn negatively affects the temperature and taste of the coffee.
