Internal install.
I do not recommend internal PID install for everyone. Read entire page. you can read why here .
Although I make every effort to use the best components and to provide the best information, the customizations are not approved by Rancilio or tested by any third party. You are performing customizations at your own risk. You assume full responsibility for any damage caused by this information on this website and information and parts obtained from pidsilvia.com.
With an internal install you are facing a risk of the PID unit having an error in reading the boiler temperature or becoming dysfunctional as a result of extreme internal heat fluctuation in the machine near the unit. The unit will become functional again after cooling down.
Keep reading for a workable solution.

As elegant as it is, I do not recommend a set-up with 2 internal units such as this.
|
The problems with the above setup.
The high heat from the boiler can reduce the life of the PID unit and can result in inaccurate readings in certain situations.
The inaccuracy resulting from the rapid temperature fluctuation within the machine caused by steaming becomes apparent when you try to brew after steaming.
Correcting this heating problem in the above set up is possible to a large degree, but requires effort and resources and is still more likely to produce inaccuracy in certain high heat situations than the recommended solution below.

Final
Recommended Setup. (only one internal PID)
|
The workable solution is the above set-up which has
only one internal unit.
If you are heavy user (your machine is on for more than 110 minutes a day, or you will brew after steaming when you have 10 or more guests) or if you are concerned about reducing the life of your PID units, this setup is appropriate only if:
The boiler is insulated.
The internal PID unit is insulated with multiple layers if you brew after steaming (foil and foam silicone, or some other better NASA insulation).
Final Conclusion: If you prefer the look of the internal install, and don't mind the extra work of cutting the front panel and using insulation, (at least on the boiler) you should be fine going internal. I myself using the internal install as above.
